Spain is the home of modern padel and still the biggest market in the world by a wide margin. But the Spanish market in 2026 looks very different from the boom years. Growth has slowed, competition is intense, and the opportunities have shifted from building new clubs to improving existing ones. Here is an overview for investors and club owners.
The numbers
According to the International Padel Federation (FIP), Spain had around 17,300 padel courts at around 4,575 clubs in mid-2025. That is more than a fifth of all padel courts in the world, and more courts than the next two countries combined. Spain also has more than 6 million padel players.
Spain has one court for roughly every 2,700 inhabitants – one of the highest densities of any large country. By comparison, emerging markets such as Poland or Germany have only a fraction of that.
A mature market
Industry analysts describe Spain as a mature market where growth has slowed. With so many courts already built, the question is no longer whether people want to play padel, but where there is still room for one more club – and how existing clubs can stay attractive.
The Global Padel Report 2026 by Playtomic and Strategy& groups Spain among the “Heartlands” – mature core markets. Among the directions of value creation the report points to in these markets are:
- Premiumisation of the club offer
- Maintenance, refurbishment and asset optimisation
- Consolidation through club chains
A fragmented market
Despite its size, the Spanish market is still very fragmented. According to the Global Padel Report, as summarised by PADEL1969, the largest padel chain in Spain operates only 14 clubs with more than 255 courts. That is a small share of a market with thousands of clubs, which leaves room for consolidation and for well-run independent clubs.
Padel in residential and hospitality projects
Padel is also becoming part of real estate. The same report notes that around 2% of Spanish courts are now located within residential developments. Hotels and resorts are adding courts too. One resort in Spain reported a 15% increase in bookings within the first year of introducing a padel court, according to the report. Read more in our article on padel courts for hotels and resorts.
Where the opportunities are in 2026
1. Replacing old courts
Many Spanish courts were built during the boom years. Turf wears out, and older structures and glass may not match what players expect today. Replacing or upgrading courts is a way for existing clubs to stay competitive without finding a new site. See our maintenance checklist and guide to glass and turf options.
2. Premium courts
In a market where players can choose between many clubs, the quality of the court matters. Panoramic courts, good lighting and modern turf make a club stand out. Compare court models in our guide to EVO vs Full Vision vs Tournament.
3. Hotels, residential projects and mixed-use sites
New courts in Spain are increasingly part of something else – a hotel, a housing development or a sports complex. For these projects, padel is an amenity that adds value to the property.
What it means for investors
Spain is not the place for a quick “build it and they will come” project. It is a market for operators who know their local area, focus on quality and run their club well. For club owners, investing in better courts can be one of the most effective ways to keep players loyal.
