Black padel courts: stylish, but hard on TV

Dark courts look elegant, but they can cause problems for cameras. What to consider when you choose turf colour.

News · 1 October 2026

Dark and completely black padel courts have become one of the most eye-catching design choices in newer padel centres. But the trend is meeting resistance, Padelbladet reported on 15 September 2026: black courts cause problems when matches are shown on TV.

Beautiful to the eye – hard for the camera

According to Padelbladet the challenge is mainly TV production. The dark surface, which looks elegant to spectators, is difficult for cameras and reduces picture quality in broadcast matches. The article reports that the international padel federation, FIP, has not approved black courts for official tournaments – but that several clubs that broadcast matches choose them anyway.

What it means for your choice of court

The colour of the turf is more than a matter of taste. Consider:

  • Tournaments: if you will host tournaments, choose a colour that is accepted for official play and works well on video.
  • Livestreaming: many clubs film matches for their players today. Classic blue and green courts typically work well for cameras.
  • Look and brand: the colour helps give the centre its identity – but weigh it against how you will use the courts.
